Imagine it is May of 1958. Ike is President. Elvis went into the Army about six weeks ago. New cars for the upcoming year are expected to have even taller tail fins. You are in the Midwest -- Indiana maybe -- standing at the edge of a flat field, looking across a road, parallel to which railroad tracks run. You hear a distant whistle and an increasing roar; a dusty black steam engine blasts past you at highway speed, a haze of smoke trailing behind, then a string of bobbing freight cars, meat reefers (red Swift, yellow Hormel and Armour and orange Wilson cars) followed by cars of more mundane merchandise.

Another train blasts by, heading in the opposite direction with a seemingly-endless string of loaded coal hoppers, ka-thunking over the jointed steel rails. At the end of each train is a bright red caboose with a grey stripe and the slogan “Nickel Plate High Speed Service”. The trains shoot by, pound over the crossing, and roll down the tracks into the distance. It is quiet.

Those days are gone, but you can relive them, albeit in a scale of one-quarter inch to the foot. The description is of operation on the Nickel Plate Road, a Midwestern “bridge line” and coal hauling railroad, as it existed the last year the road operated main line steam locomotives. The models are built from blueprints and are appropriate to the railroad and era modeled. The scale track, scenery and operation replicate the prototype.

Nickel Plate Models produces model railroad products, parts and decals of interest to modelers of the Nickel Plate Road. The primary focus of the Company is on O scale (1/4 inch to the foot or 1:48 scale) modeling and modelers, although we occasionally do models in HO and other scales. The Company markets brass models, brass kits, plastic models and custom decals. We also publish a newsletter containing items of interest to O scale NKP modelers and, as an affiliate of TrainResources.com, visitors to this Web site.

Nickel Plate Models was started by David Vaughn in 1994, to promote Nickel Plate Road modeling in O scale, where the small size of the audience makes large commercial modeling projects difficult. It was originally called Nickel Plate High Speed Products, but was shortened to its present name. Jim Canter is a joint venturer in the business.
