From its inception in the 1880s, the Nickel Plate Road moved livestock and dressed meat traffic over its main lines, from St. Louis, Peoria, and Chicago, to Cleveland, Buffalo, and East Coast meat packers. In 1922, the NKP began purchasing new stock cars to expand this business. The cars in the 40000 series were manufactured by the Illinois Car Company.
