HISTORICAL NOTES

D&TS - Pleasant Bay Railway incorporated in March, 1898. In 1899, PB purchased Toledo & Ottawa Beach and renamed itself Detroit & Toledo Shore Line.  Sold in 1902, jointly to Grand Trunk Western and Toledo, St. Louis & Western ("Clover Leaf"), the line fully opened to Detroit in 1903.  TStL&W interest passed to successor Nickel Plate Road in 1923, then to Norfolk & Western in 1964. The Detroit & Toledo Shore Line was owned 50-50 by the Nickel Plate Road (NKP) and the Grand Trunk Western (GT, GTW) for most of its life. The D&TS gave both roads rapid access between the automobile assembly plants of Detroit area and the Midwest, through Lang Yard in Toledo, Ohio. Grand Trunk Western bought N&W's half interest in 1981 and immediately merged D&TS. More...

Auto Parts Cars - There are still about 14,000 auto parts boxcars in service in the U.S., ranging in size from aging 50-foot and 60-foot cars (many of them built prior to 1973) to 86-foot hi-cube models with a 12-foot, 9-inch inside height. More... A history of automobile transportation by the railroads.

This model - The prototype cars were former NKP 87100 series cars. They were rebuilt by the Nickel Plate Road, in their Conneaut, Ohio, shops in 1963. These Pecos River models are identical to the Detroit & Toledo Shore Line's 5300 series cars.

Note that the correct reporting marks are D&TS, not D&TSL. In modern times, the '&' has been dropped.
